Trauma

Overview

Trauma results from experiencing or witnessing events that are emotionally disturbing or life-threatening. This might include accidents, violence, abuse, natural disasters, medical emergencies, or sudden loss. Trauma can also be developmental, resulting from ongoing harmful experiences in childhood. The impact isn't determined by the event itself but by how it affects you personally. What's traumatic for one person might not be for another.

Impact on your general wellbeing

Trauma can profoundly affect your sense of safety, trust, and control over your life. You might experience flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive thoughts about the event. Physical symptoms can include hypervigilance, startled responses, fatigue, or chronic pain. Emotionally, trauma often brings feelings of numbness, detachment, anxiety, depression, or overwhelming emotions. Many people develop avoidance behaviors, steering clear of situations, places, or people that remind them of the trauma.

How counselling can help process trauma and heal

Counselling provides specialized approaches for trauma recovery. Trauma-focused CBT helps process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can help your brain process stuck traumatic memories. Grounding techniques help you stay present when triggered. We work on rebuilding your sense of safety and control, developing healthy coping strategies, and gradually reducing avoidance behaviors. The therapeutic relationship itself becomes a space to rebuild trust and connection.
