Addiction

Overview

Addiction involves compulsive engagement with substances or behaviors despite harmful consequences. This might include alcohol, drugs, gambling, shopping, food, technology, or other activities that provide temporary relief or pleasure but ultimately create more problems. Addiction often develops as a way to cope with underlying pain, trauma, stress, or mental health issues. It becomes problematic when it interferes with your relationships, work, health, or values.

Impact on your general wellbeing

Addiction impacts every area of your life, often creating a cycle of shame, secrecy, and isolation. Physical health may deteriorate, relationships become strained or broken, and work or financial problems may develop. The addiction often becomes central to daily life, with increasing amounts of time spent thinking about, engaging in, or recovering from the addictive behavior. Self-esteem typically suffers as you may feel powerless to change despite wanting to.

How counselling can help you overcome addiction

Counselling addresses both the addictive behavior and the underlying issues that contribute to it. We explore triggers, develop healthy coping strategies, and work on building a life that feels meaningful without the addiction. Motivational interviewing helps strengthen your internal motivation for change. Cognitive approaches identify and challenge thoughts that support addictive behaviors. We might work on trauma healing, emotional regulation, relationship skills, and building a support network. Relapse prevention planning helps you prepare for challenges and setbacks.
